All our directors are highly skilled volunteers. Most have a background in finance and decades of experience working in the sector. They’re credit union members themselves, and they’re united by their passion for giving back to the community.
As a Bristol Credit Union member, you can vote for new board members each year at the AGM.
How it works:
- The board has up to 11 members
- They serve for a term of three years and can be reelected a maximum of three times (meaning 9 years maximum service)
- BCU members vote for new board members each year
- The board chooses a chair, vice-chair and secretary
Lewis Ryden (Chair) joined the board in March 2016 and is a founding partner at local business Sybaris Chauffeurs. He has a background in financial services having held several roles at Lloyds Bank in Bristol, primarily in customer insight and call centre management. Lewis now also works as a consultant helping organisations to improve their delivery of Customer and People Experience.
Nigel Stenner (Deputy Chair) joined the board in August 2017 and is a senior director of project management at ICON Clinical Research. He has a background in clinical research (focusing on oncology) specialising in project and operations management. He has held several roles within the pharmaceutical industry now supporting the development of new drugs through venture capital and investment funding.
Clare Coyne (Secretary) joined the Board in 2016 and became BCU Secretary at the AGM in 2017. She was previously Secretary to the Trustees of a large pension scheme in Bristol for ten years, as well as working on Freedom of Information and Data Protection, Privacy and Information Rights. She has volunteered at a Foodbank in Bristol and with her local Scout Group.
Jo Bailey-Watson joined the board in October 2019. She is a qualified accountant and audit manager with a financial services company and has worked with a wide range of organisations from NATO to a local Housing Association. Jo brings expert knowledge and skills in both Internal and External Audit. Jo has previously volunteered for BCU, been a school governor, and in 2019 was nominated for the Women in Insurance awards.
Jonquil Cairns joined the Board in 2015. She brings 25 years’ experience from Lloyds Banking Group, in Retail, Commercial and Operations functions, and her qualification as a Certified Accountant to her role as a Director. She is Chair of the Risk Oversight Committee and a member of the Audit Committee. Having recently retired, Jonquil also volunteers as a Business Mentor for the Prince's Trust and as a Ranger at Bristol Zoo.
Sara Davies joined the board in early 2017. She has worked as a Senior Research Fellow at the Personal Finance Research Centre, at the University of Bristol since 2009. Her research focuses on understanding financial policy and products from the perspective of the consumer. Prior to this, she undertook market research for financial clients via a Bristol-based market research agency.
Louise Eaton-Terry joined the board in October 2019. She looks after the development of Life Cover and Funeral Plans for a mutual financial services company, which have been rated 5* by Fairer Finance. Louise is an authority on funeral poverty, leading PR and public affairs on these matters, including lobbying MPs to address flaws in state support. Louise was commended in the 2019 Women in Financial Services awards.
Paul Handford has been a member of the Board since 2013 and has brought his significant experience of marketing to BCU serving on the Marketing Committee since he joined, and he's currently Chair of The People Committee. Paul is Communications Director at Resonance, a social impact investment company. Paul is Bristol born and bred and he has over 30 years experience of marketing and communications in financial, energy, education and leisure sectors.
Denis Lindsay joined the board in December 2019. He brings experience from having held a number of voluntary non-executive roles, including as Chair of school governors, supporting a technology start-up, and on the board of St. Paul’s Carnival - where they won Best Event in the 2019 Bristol Life Awards. Denis works for multinational companies helping to deliver digital and IT transformation projects.
Simon Taylor joined the board in December 2019. He's an experienced board Trustee and Director, having worked with many different organisations including churches, schools, the Redcliffe Childrens’ Centre, and another credit union, Derbyshire Community Bank. Simon is Director of Ministry Development for the Bristol Diocese, previously Canon Chancellor of Derby Cathedral, and Priest in Charge at St. Mary Redcliffe.

Application process for nomination for election as a Director of Bristol Credit Union
- You will be invited to have a face to face meeting, usually with the Chair or vice Chair to hear about what being a Director involves, the time commitment and the role you might play on the Board.
- If you wish to proceed you will need to complete a short application form setting out why you want to become a Director.
- On receipt of the application the Nominating Committee will arrange a short interview for you usually with 2 Directors
- If successful you will receive a formal offer letter which will include the proposed date for your co-option to the Board and nomination at the Annual General Meeting. Details of the Induction Programme will also be included.
- If you are happy to accept the offer you will be asked to confirm this in writing, provide two references and confirm your suitability to be a Director of BCU.
