Important information

If you have a Bristol Credit Union Current Account (CUCA), you will have received a letter from us informing you that we are no longer able to provide this service for our members. If you havenít received your letter then please contact us as soon as possible.

The CUCA is provided through a contract with one of the credit union trade associations (ABCUL) and their banking partner, The Co-operative Bank plc. Following discussions with The Co-operative Bank, ABCUL and other participating credit unions, we have been informed that the volume of current account users does not justify maintaining the existing service and that we will have to withdraw this product. This means that your Credit Union Account will be closed.

All savings and loan accounts that you hold with Bristol Credit Union will not be affected by this change and will continue to run as normal.

We are aware of the inconvenience this may cause in finding an alternative provider, which is why we are committed to providing any support you might need to open a new account.

Making alternative arrangements

ē    Most high street banks now offer bank accounts without overdraft charges. Here is a list from the Which website of the 9 major banks and building societies who offer fee-free basic bank accounts for 2016.

We have spoken with our local branch of the Co-operative Bank and they are happy to open accounts for Bristol Credit Union members. You can do this online or you can call them on 0117 929 7626 and make an appointment Ė just let them know that you are a BCU member and that you have a current account that is being closed.

ē    We can help you open an Engage prepaid card. This is a Visa Debit card that can be used in shops and for online purchases. It isnít a current account and you canít set up direct debits (although there is a facility for standing orders) but if you just need access to your money with a debit card this may be a solution. Help and advice available

If you need additional support, the teams at Talking Money and Pennywise have offered to help our members in Bristol to make these changes as simple as possible.

Switching accounts

Once you have opened a new account youíll need to transfer credit payments and change the details for any direct debits and standing orders. We have written to you with a list of regular debit payments and details of any external credits to your account in the last three months to help you with transferring them.

If you havenít received this list, please request these details, ideally by email, to info@bristolcreditunion.org.uk.

Once you've opened a new account

When you have opened your new account and set up new direct debits and standing orders, please let us know so we can cancel these from your Credit Union current account to ensure payments are not taken twice. It is also important to stop using your CUCA card and cancel any continuous card payments as soon as you have a new account opened.

If you have a standing order to make loan repayments and savings deposits to BCU we can give you the details for these to ensure there is no interruption to the payments, or you can arrange for a benefit or other credit be paid into your savings account to cover your repayments.

We do apologise that we have to take this unavoidable action. If you need any help with opening a new account or transferring payments from your Credit Union current account, please contact us, or one of the advice agencies mentioned as soon as possible.

Please note:  Our phone lines can be very busy so we recommend emailing us at info@bristolcreditunion.org.uk for specific information or questions you may have about the changes. Alternatively, try calling us in the afternoons when phone lines are quieter.
